Chapter Twenty-two: On What Al-reza (s) Said About Faith That Is Recognition of Paradise, Verbal Confession and Physical Action
22-1 Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abdurrahman al-Qurashi al-Hakim narrated that Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Khalid ibn Al-Hassan al-Motawwa’iy al-Bokhari quoted on the authority of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dawood in Baghdad, on the authority of Ali ibn Harb al-Mulla’ee, on the authority of Abu Salt al-Harawi, on the authority of Ali ibn Musa Al-Reza (s), on the authority of his father Musa ibn Ja’far (s), on the authority of his father Ja’far ibn Muhammad (s), on the authority of his father Muhammad ibn Ali (s), on the authority of his father Ali ibn Al-Hussein (s), on the authority of his father Al-Hussein ibn Ali (s), on the authority of his father Ali ibn Abi Talib (s) that God’s Prophet (s) said, “Faith is recognition by the heart, expression by the tongue and enacting by the body parts.”
22-2 Abu Ahmad Muhammad ibn Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Bondar at Forqanah narrated that Abul Abbas Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Jomhoor al-Hammadi quoted on the authority of Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Mansoor al-Balkhi at Mecca, on the authority of Abu Yunus Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Abdullah al-Jomahy, on the authority of Abdul Salam ibn Salih al-Harawi, on the authority of Ali ibn Musa Al-Reza (s), on the authority of his father Musa ibn Ja’far (s), on the authority of his father Ja’far ibn Muhammad (s), on the authority of his father Muhammad ibn Ali (s), on the authority of Ali ibn Al-Hussein (s), on the authority of his father Al-Hussein ibn Ali (s), on the authority of his father Ali ibn Abi Talib (s) that God’s Prophet (s) said, “Faith is recognition by the heart, expression by the tongue and enacting by the body parts.”

بابُ ما جاءَ عَنِ الرِّضا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ فِي الإِيمانِ وَأَنَّهُ مَعْرِفَةٌ بِالجَنانِ وَإِقْرارٌ بِاللِّسان وَعَمَلٌ بِالأَركانِ
1 - حَدَّثَنا أَحْمَدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمن القُرَشِي الْحاكِم قالَ: حَدَّثَنا أَبُوبكر مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خالِد بن الحَسَن المطوعي البخاري قالَ: حَدَّثَنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبي داوُدِ بِبَغْداد قالَ: حَدَّثَنا عَلِىِّ بْنِ حرب الملائي قالَ: حَدَّثَنا أَبُو الصَّلْتِ الهَرَوِيِّ قالَ: حَدَّثَنا عَلِىِّ بْنِ مُوسَى الرِّضا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُعَنْ أَبِيهِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَر عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّد عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ مُحَمَّد عَلِيِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ عَلِىِّ بْنِ الحُسَيْن عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ الحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِي طالِب عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: قالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ الإِيمَانُ إِقْرَارٌ بِاللِّسَانِ وَمَعْرِفَةٌ بِالْقَلْبِ وَعَمَلٌ بِالأَرْكَانِ.
2 - حَدَّثَنا أَبُو أحْمَد مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّد البندار بِفُرغانَة قالَ: حَدَّثَنا أَبُو العَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جمهور الحمادي قالَ: حَدَّثَنا مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عمر بْنِ مَنْصُورِ البلخي بِمَكَّةِ قالَ: حَدَّثَنايُونِس بن مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَزِيد بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّه الجمحي قالَ: حَدَّثَنا عَبْد السَّلامُ بْنِ صالِح الهَرَوِيِّ، عَن عَلاىِّ بْنِِلرِّضا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبِيهِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَر عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّد عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ عَلِىِّ بْنِ الحُسَيْن عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ الحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِي طالِب عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: قالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ الإيمان مَعْرِفَةِ بِالقلب وَإِقْرار بِاللسان وَعَمَلِ بِالأَركان.
3 - حَدَّثَنا مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الحَسَن بْنِ أَحْمَدِ بْنِ الوَلِيد رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: حَدَّثَنا مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الحَسَن الصَفَّار عَن أَحْمَدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَن بَكْرِ بْنِ صالِح الرَّازِيُّ، عَن أَبي الصَّلْتِ
authority of Bakr ibn Salih al-Razi, on the authority of Abi Salt al-Harawi, “I asked Al-Reza (s) about faith. He (s) said, ‘Faith is belief in the heart, expression by the tongue and enacting by the body parts. Anything else would not be faith.’”
22-4 In what Soleiman ibn Ahmad ibn Ayyoub al-Lakhmi wrote to me from Isfahan, he narrated that Ali ibn Abdul Aziz and Ma’az ibn al-Muthanna quoted on the authority of Abdul Salam ibn Salih al-Harawi, on the authority of Ali ibn Musa Al-Reza (s), on the authority of his father Musa ibn Ja’far (s), on the authority of his father Ja’far ibn Muhammad (s), on the authority of his father Muhammad ibn Ali (s), on the authority of Ali ibn Al-Hussein (s), on the authority of his father Al-Hussein ibn Ali (s), on the authority of his father Ali ibn Abi Talib (s) that God’s Prophet (s) said, “Faith is recognition by the heart, expression by the tongue and enacting by the body parts.”
22-5 In the (Arabic) month of Rajab of the year 339 A.H Hamza ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ja’far ibn Muhammad ibn Zayd ibn Ali ibn Al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (s) in Qum narrated that Abul Hassan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Bazzaz quoted on the authority of Abu Ahmad Dawood ibn Soleiman al-Qadhi, on the authority of Ali ibn Musa Al-Reza (s), on the authority of his father Musa ibn Ja’far (s), on the authority of his father Ja’far ibn Muhammad (s), on the authority of his father Muhammad ibn Ali (s), on the authority of Ali ibn Al-Hussein (s), on the authority of his father Al-Hussein ibn Ali (s), on the authority of his father Ali ibn Abi Talib (s) that God’s Prophet (s) said, “Faith is recognition by the heart, expression by the tongue and enacting by the body parts.”
The same tradition was narrated by Hamza ibn Muhammad al-Alawi - may God be pleased with him - who quoted it on the authority of Abdurrahman ibn Abi Hatam who quoted it on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abi Salt al-Harawi Abdul Salam ibn Salih, on the authority of Ali ibn Musa Al-Reza (s), through a similar chain of narrations as before. Abu Hatam said, “Should the names in these chains of documentation of tradition be read to an insane man he would get healed.”
22-6 My father - May God Have Mercy upon Him - narrated that Muhammad ibn Ma’qil al-Qirmiseeni quoted on the authority of Muhammad
الهَرَوِيِّ قالَ سَأَلْت الرِّضا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَنِ الإِيمان فَقالَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ: الإِيمان عَقدٌ بِالقَلب وَلَفظٌ بِاللِّسانِ وَعَمَلٌ بِالجَوارِح لا يَكُونُ الإيمانُ إِلاّ هكَذا.
4 - أَخْبَرنِي سُلَيْمان بْنِ أَحْمَدِ بْنِ أَيُّوب اللخمي فِيما كتب إِلى من أصبهان قالَ: حَدَّثَناعَبْد العَزِيز وَمَعاذَ بْنِ المُثَنّى قالا حَدَّثَنا عَبْد السَّلامُ بْنِ صالِح الهَرَوِيِّ قالَ: حَدَّثَنا عَلِىِّ بْنِ مُوسَى الرِّضا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَر عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّد عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبِيهِ عَلِىِّ بْنِ الحُسَيْن عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن أَبيهِ الحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، عَن عَلِيِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: قالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ: الإِيمان مَعرِفَةٌ بِالقَلبِ وَإِقْرارٌ بِاللِّسانِ وَعَمَلٌ بِالأَركانِ.
5 - حَدَّثَنا حَمْزَة بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيْد بْنِ عَلِىِّ بْنِ الحُسَيْن بْنِأَبي طالِب عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ بقم فِي رَجَب سِنَةَ تِسْعَ وَثَلاثِينَ وَثَلاثِمائَةٍ قالَ: حَدَّثَني أَبُو الحَسَن عَلِىِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّد البزاز قالَ: حَدَّثَنا أَبُو أحْمَد داوُدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمان الغازي قالَ: حَدَّثَناعَلِىِّ بْنِ مُوسَى الرِّضا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ حَدَّثَنا أَبي مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَر عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: حَدَّثَني أَبي جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّد عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: حَدَّثَني أَبي مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِى الباقِر عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: حَدَّثَني أَبي عَلِىِّ بْنِ الحُسَيْن عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: حَدَّثَني أَبي الحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: حَدَّثَني أَبي أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنين عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِي طالِب عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ قالَ: قالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ: الإِيمان إِقْرارٌ بِاللّسانِ وَمَعْرِفَةٌ بِالقَلبِ وَعَمَلٌ بِالأَركانَ.
قالَ حَمْزَة بْن مُحَمَّد العَلَوِي رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَسَمِعْتُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمن بْنِ أَبي حاتَمُ يَقُولُ: وَسَمِعْتُ أَبي يَقُولُ: وَقَدْ رَوى هذا الْحَدِيث، عَن أَبي الصَّلْتِ الهَرَوِيِّ عَبْد السَّلامُ بن صالِحٍ، عَن عَلِىِّ بْنِمُوسَىالرِّضاعَلَيْهِمَا السَّلاَمُ بِإِسْنادِهِ مِثْلَهُ قالَ أَبُو حاتَمُ: لَوْ قُرِىَ هذا الإِسنادُ عَلَى مَجنُونٍ لَبَرِئٍ.
6 - حَدَّثَنا أَبي رحمه الله قالَ: حَدَّثَنا مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَعْقِل القِرْميسِينيُّ، عَن مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّه
ibn Abdullah ibn Tahir, “I was standing with my father. Abu Salt al-Harawi, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal were also present there. My father said, “Each of you should narrate a tradition for me.” Abu Salt al-Harawi said, “Ali ibn Musa Al-Reza (s), who I swear by God was really pleasant as his name indicates, quoted on the authority of his father Musa ibn Ja’far (s), on the authority of his father Ja’far ibn Muhammad (s), on the authority of his father Muhammad ibn Ali (s), on the authority of Ali ibn Al-Hussein (s), on the authority of his father Al-Hussein ibn Ali (s), on the authority of his father Ali ibn Abi Talib (s) that God’s Prophet (s) said, “Faith consists of talking and action.” When we left Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal said, “What form of chain of traditions was that?” My father said, “It is the healing medication for the insane. If they treat a mad man using it, he will be healed.”
بْنِ طاهِرٍ قالَ: كُنْت واقِفاً عَلَى رَأْس أَبي وَعنْدَهُ أَبُوالصَّلْتِ الهَرَوِيِّ وَإِسْحاق بْنِ راهْوَيْه، وَأَحمَدِ بنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَنبَلٍ فَقالَ أَبي: لِيُحَدِّثني كُلِّ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ، فَقالَ أَبُو الصَّلْتِ الهَرَوِيِّ: حَدَّثني عَلِيُّ بنُ موسَى الرِّضاعَلَيْهِمَا السَّلاَمُ - وَكانَ وَاللَّه رَضِىَ كَما سُمِّي- عَنْ أَبيهِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، عَن أَبيهِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَن أبِيهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِىّ، عَن أَبيهِ عَلِىِّ بْنِ الحُسَيْن، عَن أَبِيهِ عَلِيِّ، عَن أَبِيهِ عَلِىِّ بنِ أَبي طالِب عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلاَمُ قالَ: قالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ: الإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ وَعَمَلٌ؛ فَلَمَّا خَرَجْنَا، قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ: مَا هَذَا الإِسْنَادُ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبِي: هَذَا سَعُوطُ الَْمجَانِينِ إِذَا سُعِطَ بِهِ الَْمجْنُونُ أَفَاقَ.
